in Radiant Heating
To take the bleeder valve s
out so we can clean behind them
does water have to be shut off
is it just a hex nut to take off then
push cooper pipe in toward s center

does anyone sell original round knobs to cover the stem 
they are almost all broken

    Originally they had wooden knobs . Back in the day expansion tanks were open to the system and bleeding the radiators or convectors was a normal pass time . You would need to drop system pressure tp replace .. I would recommend manual peanut bleeders .

    You can find plastic knobs. Yes you will have to drain the radiator. The back plate may be nailed to the wall.

    There are 10 upstairs and 10 downstairs , can I turn pressure off
    ( water off) and do one at a time or one after the other all at once 
    before heating season 
    which is like next week
    in Meaford Ontario

    The peanut valve sounds good
    it’s a rental and I don’t want people 
    playing with them
    there are 2 wooden knobs on two of them

    Take the pressure off the boiler, then open all the bleeders and let the rads drain.
    That's quite a project to just clean behind them.
    Maybe replace the bleeders or at least have some extras on hand.
