    That's a Bridgeport Loop. Looks sort of like a bridge, doesn't it?

    Was it an attempt at a cross over trap to vent that return.....which looks like it would have a water loop on the right hand side of it anyway?

    That definitely looks like something you would see in Bridgeport Chicago ( The Daley family home town). There's the long standing jokes about when they starting installing inside toilets in Bridgeport that many a bathroom door needed to be cut out in shape of the toilet bowl so you could close the door.
