Air flow direction on old 1965 Oil Furnace

What direction should this fan turn? The yellow or the red arrow. The pump direction is the yellow arrow but wouldnt that be pulling air out of the chamber instead of blowing air into it?

Looking at it from the right side of your photo, should be counter clockwise, looking from the left, both should be turning clockwise, if I'm seeing it correctly.
    Are you having a problem?
That burner is literally as old as me...'65, good year.
Modern stuff, everything is the same, and stocked that way.
Older stuff, you have to spec out rotation on pumps and motors.

Back up a little and get a pic of the whole thing :)

It doesnt run well, I used up 140 gallons of fuel in 2 months time. I do need to rebuild the the chamber but I am waiting for Summer months to do so. I used Rutland 610 Refractory Cement to hold me over till then. I rebuilt the entire system the fuel pump, motor, fuel lines, ignition, nozzle all new. only thing thats original is the fan.

I got the same motor specs and same fuel pump specs, actually got a 15 year old fuel pump on ebay never opened from the Army supply. as the old one both marathon motors and yes I know the rotation of the fuel pump is clockwise.

Now I know that cracked and crumbling chamber can cause air issues But I wanted to get some second advice on this fan rotation and if its correct. It seems like it should run counter clockwise doesnt it?

It's correct, pushes air down the air tube. Why do you think it's wrong, all of a sudden?
56 years...maybe it's time for a new, modern, properly sized boiler?

Set the draft to -.02 over the fire, try to get it to a 1 smoke or a trace, is as good as it's going to get. Any more excess air than that and the CO will go way up.

Motors and pumps the usual way is you judge the rotation by looking at the shaft end of the motor or pump.

So looking at the pump the rotation would be CCW. The motor would be CW.

You have to be careful with motors. In spite of the fact that you are supposed to look at the shaft end some motors will be marked Example: CCW LE or counter clockwise lead end.

You would be better off searching for a decent used Carlin or Beckett burner than putting money into the old burner

Its a little late for buying a whole new burner I have already replaced just about everything on it. I looked at the actual shaft. The fuel pump is turning clockwise like the arrow on the pump says it should turn and I set the motor to turn counter clockwise. Just like the original equipment.

This furnace use to be in my house, I upgraded to natural gas a few years back in the house and it is now in my garage so the furnace running is not a must have its a perk. :D I have a beautiful HEIL Furnace and AC unit. The way the fan is turning right ATM would not be the direction to push air down the tube then. The motor is counter clockwise while the pump is clockwise.

It seemed to me that In order for fan to be turning the right direction the fuel pump would have to turn counter clockwise but thats not the direction it turns. This could be why I cant get the correct CO numbers. I have never been able to get this to run right from the day I bought my house, hence the reason ive replaced everything on it.

It's definitely supposed to be CW rotation on the motor. If it's a CW pump then it's the wrong pump.
On a modern burner, the axis is below the air tube. On yours, its above. It's been a while but I believe most 1725 RPM burner motors are reversible anyway. You need a 1725 RPM CCW fuel pump.
Is that an American Standard burner?

I’m pretty nervous about the discolored pvc flue pipe on the furnace pictured. Wrong pipe and potentially very dangerous

Viewed from the motor end, the fan should turn counterclockwise.

Viewed from the fuel unit (pump) end, it should turn clockwise.

That's definitely an oldie- what brand is it?

Is that blower wheel on the shaft the right way around? i can't tell if it would fit either way, I can't see enough of how it mounts. Maybe someone dissembled it and put it back together the wrong way.

@HVACNUT is telling me it should be clockwise to the motor and @Steamhead is saying the motor should turn Counter Clockwise

@mattmia2 I thought so as well but the blower wheel wouldnt fit if it was the other direction. Its a rubber extension to the pump shaft with a set screw.

@STEVEusaPA What do u mean by wrong pipe. Wrong type of PVC?

    The make and model is

@HVACNUT It is a clockwise pump and the old pump that was on it was also a clockwise pump........ :s

This clockwise counter clockwise thing has got me confused.

This is what we call an "undershot" burner the blast tube is below the fan (not that that matters for this discussion)

Clearly looking at the motor shaft with the shaft end pointing at you the motor must turn Clockwise. The pump with the pump shaft pointing at you must turn CCW

Thank you for clearing it up. So I replaced the old pump with a identical new pump that was in it from the previous owner who had a clockwise pump in it. Turns out it is the wrong pump then. This is why I asked in this forum it seemed to me like it was running in the wrong direction but I wanted to double check cause like I said before I replaced it with one that was the same direction (clockwise) as previously installed.
