Preferred orientation for stop valve stem?

Other than for ease of access is there a preferred orientation for a residential water stop valve stem?

    I would go with ease of access - no matter what the stem orientation. I think vertical, with the stem pointing up looks nice. Stop-check valves (a.k.a. flo-control valves) need to be oriented so the disc hangs down when there is no flow. Ditto for some check valves.

    A stop and waste is usually at 9:00 or 3:00 so the drain will be on the bottom. Any other valve straight up is always best because crud travels on the bottom of the pipe.

    But it's not always possible to mount them straight up

    Many codes do not allow stop and waste valves.
