what should I do with abandoned steam pipes

When I remodeled the first floor of my home 10 years ago, we abandoned the steam heat on the first floor and replaced it with a hot water zone. The second floor still has steam heat. I am remodeling my basement and I found an old steam pipe connected off the main that is 14 ft long and capped at the end. Should I try to plug it nearer the main? not sure if it is worth the trouble. thank you.

It make no difference in the steam system performance. If it's in your way cap it closer to the main, if not leave it.

As long as it is sloped to drain back into the main it will produce heat. If sagged the opposite way it will fill with condensate, not drain and maybe rust thru on the bottom.

IF there’s no leaks to let out the air, it probably won’t heat at all. If its not in your way, leave it. More likely to cause issues trying to remove more piping.

i will ensure it is pitched back to the main so condensate does not accumulate
