in Oil Heating
I purchased a building built in 1927. The coal furnace was replaced with an oil furnace in 2005. The oil furnace uses the original chimney which is huge (3'X3'). We are converting this building to a dinner theatre and the chimney is off center at the front of the new stage area. We would like to knock down the chimney and install a vent at the wall (which is about 5' from the chimney). I have 28' (7 of 48" each) Direct Vent System Component DV-48D double wall pipe. It says "For use on direct vent gas appliances. Not for use with solid fuel." Can I use that for the venting of the oil furnace? Thanks!

    Get a professional HVAC Technician in there. Many furnaces can't be converted to direct venting.

    Is that venting material "B" or "L" vent, or something else?

    that's a tough one---kinda like asking 'how do i buy a gun and learn self defense' on the net. it seems like you have B vent, which is only good for gas appliances. So, 'no' would be the quick answer. You also need a power venter.

    If you're gonna take your safety into your own hands that's one thing, but you kinda need a pro if you have guests and such

    Could you switch to gas?

    This pipe is designed for use with gas direct vent fireplaces. It is NOT suitable for oil fired equipment. It is for GAS equipment only and then, only direct vent gas appliances such as fireplaces and stoves. Oil would eat up that aluminum inner liner in no time not to mention the termination. Use type 'L' vent for oil. As Steve said, consider power venting if you can get it to a sidewall.
