Question: Are recessed radiators compatible with an old single pipe steam system?

    There are many smarter than me on old rads but some units were made to sit in the wall. Most are meant to be out along the wall. But in general if the rad is warmer that the room It’s in, it will send its heat whether it’s recessed or not. Mother Nature like to send the warmed air straight up, less happy with sending it at an angle (not straight up)

    Yes they are, we've seen hundreds of Sun-Rad type radiators installed that were recessed. I've also seen a few 'regular' free standing cast iron radiators that were recessed. I agree with @GW though, in most cases you will get less output from a recessed radiator. The way around the reduced output is to up-size the radiator.

    Unfortunately, yes. I have worked many of them. Always a royal nuisance . I've never met a recessed that I do not dislike. When installing recessed radiators you do have to account for some heat lost due to the fact that they are recessed. Who ever manufactures the radiators should have detail charts.
