Cleaning Big Mouth Vent

I was wondering if there is a way to clean a big mouth steam vent. In my case it would be more of a question for preventable maintenance. Mine is still working fine, but I was wondering if its worth cleaning them maybe once a year with water or some other solution.

    The face plate, with the large hex nut unscrews exposing the o-ring and the element. You can rise it out if it seems to spit water or seep steam, otherwise I'd not bother with it. Both the o-ring and the element are replaceable should they fail.
