Steam trap identification

This trap is mounted on the left side of a steam radiator in a 100yr old home. The photo shown with the union to the right is the position it was installed in with the 1/2 female ips connection in the downward position. Ive never seen a trap like this and its the only one in the home. In order for this trap to be mounted in the normal position the union and radiator spud would have to go onto the piping coming through the floor and a nipple into the radiator. The radiator delivers no heat but i dont know if it ever did, owners are new to the home. My question is has anyone ever seen one like this? I wanted to put in a regular hoffman but the throw for the spud is too long and the piping is encased in concrete in a 2nd floor bath, so i have no give. Best i can come up with is a regular hoffman and a radiator the same size less one section and run a nipple and coupling on the valve side

You might try removing the old 1/2" spud from the radiator and installing a Tunstall EC2 or an Armstrong TS-2 trap. Both are pretty small traps (of current manufacture) for tight fits.

You will most likely need a small brass male x female "pipe stretcher" as used by the sprinkler head installers to get out of a jam as the traps mentioned above are a bit shorter than the existing trap.

I've got an example of that H&M trap you have in my "petting zoo" of traps and valves, as well as examples the two traps listed above and it looks like they are your best shot as far as complete replacement goes.

Barnes & Jones or Tunstall may sell a rebuilt kit for your existing trap, but I can't seem to find it listed. I'm sure I'm missing something....

You could take the guts out of the trap and install an orifice in the steam valve union....maybe a ten dollar part.

Can you access the pipe on the floor below or in the basement? You could put a new trap there put the old trap back on minus the innards
