I have an old shell and tube heat exchanger laying around, and am contemplating using it as a solar heater for my pool. I get plenty of sun, the bundle is a ubend, 2 pass, 30 tubes about 40 inches long...so a decent size. I'm thinking if I paint the shell Matt black to absorb more heat from the sun it would heat up the air in the shell around the tubes to get a few free degrees into the pool...what do you guys think?

Not enough surface area to work and the pool water will eat the heat exchanger

Hello, The old rule of thumb is 75% of the surface area of the pool as unglazed collectors. So that needs to be a BIG heat exchanger!
