Greetings All,

We have an unusual situation and are looking for some experience/wisdom out there.
Lochinvar Boiler kept locking out on flame failure. Long story short, natural gas, old section of Philadelphia. The strainer on the inlet of the gas valve gets clogged with a fine reddish brown dust. Kinda looks like cinnamon. I'm guessing that its iron oxide from old cast iron gas mains. We have a drip leg in the line that collects a small amount of the dust and the inside of the viewable portion of the gas line has a light coating.

We've brushed and blown out the strainer (gently, gently) several times and it works fine for a month or two.
I'm trying to connect with the right person at PGW but thus far it's been like shouting down a black hole.

Is there a way to filter the gas line without reducing the capacity? It's been suggested to pull the strainer on the gas valve, but I don't think that's any kind of a good or long term solution.

Any thoughts appreciated.

    I'm not familiar with a strainer on a natural gas line. I recommend that you call your gas company.

    I'm hoping someone has a answer for you. I too have had some gas quality supply issues. Other than building a large oversized U tube with a clean out drip leg, as soon as the gas line entered the building, and grossly oversizing, and adding more drip legs....
    There has to be a better way, maybe.
