Buzzing gas boiler

in Gas Heating
My 1970's gas boiler is making an intermittent buzzing noise.

This is only whilst it is heating up/operating.

    Most boiler buzzing seems to come from the relay which in your case, sits under the transformer. Less often, it comes from the gas valve.
    8.33 lbs./gal. x 60 min./hr. x 20°ΔT = 10,000 BTU's/hour

    Two btu per sq ft for degree difference for a slab

    Its likely the coil for the relay.
    It's also likely your boiler wants an appointment with Dr. Kevorkian.

    I have had a quick look for the relay serial number and nothing for sale.

    I'm finding similar Honeywell relays. I need 40 VA and 27 Volt secondary. Would a relay with 38VA and 26.5 volts do the job?

    Sometimes if you move/push on the relay box or the relay itself (remove cover) you maybe able to make the sound go away.
    That is also known as a fan center. I'm not sure if it is a dpdt, or a spdt, or other. If that is just controlling the burner, the 38 or 40va is fine. Description should be on the paper attached to the cover if you still can read it.

    Ah thanks for the tip. I will try that tomorrow.
    The paper label is legible but no word on the poles.
    Maybe I can find just the relay if there is any part number on there when I take it off. Too late and chilly for that tonight!

    You can use what's called a
    Fan Center Control Relay.
    It's a 115v primary, 24v, 40va secondary and is attached to a 1900 plate that will fit on the existing junction box.
    Connect R and G to the thermostat and a N.O. -| |- Contact on the relay for the burner circuit. Follow the schematic, and when done, try it with the gas off first.
