I have an inground outdoor swimming pool with an OIL FIRED POOL HEATER. When ordering oil for the heater I have been asked by fuel companies what type of fuel I need. I DON'T KNOW , I didn't know there were different kinds !
If anyone owns an oil fired pool heater , what type of oil do I need ?
Please help and thank you for your time.

Usually it's just heating oil, unless it requires kerosene.
But make and model like @Steamhead said to make sure.

    Dear Steamhead,
The oil fired pool heater is a Teledyne Laars XL3. Just need to know what kind of oil I need. one company asked if i needed #2 oil. I have no idea. Thanks for your help.

I googled the model #, & found this:

pg 3 = use #2 fuel oil or #2 diesel

FWIW, the burner in the instruction sheet looks like a standard Beckett AF or AFG. This reinforces the #2 oil spec.

I've installed a couple of these boilers not as pool heaters but outdoor boilers because there was no room in the buildings. I know... not my call. This was on Martha's Vineyard. Most folks ended up using clear kerosene. Kept the boiler cleaner and easier to service. Also helped with running in cold conditions.

Correction I haven't installed that particular boiler. I was thinking of Ultimate pool heaters.

I wouldn't recommend kero, assuming the pool heater is running during swimming season, not the dead of winter. Just heating oil, and probably not bio unless you're pumping it dry at the end of the season, and treating the tank with additives on first fill up.

The XL3 with the Beckett AFG runs on #2 fuel. Should be 2 pipe because it has a B pump. Keep in mind they no longer manufacture those boilers. Parts are still readily available as far as controls, wiring harnesses, burner parts, etc. But if the flue collector or HX needs replacement, your out of luck.
