I have searched the web and most sites are using these terms interchangeably. However I know that there is definitely a distinct difference. Can someone please articulate what the difference is?

Non return valve are a weighted check valve usually used on high pressure steam boilers. These valves have two functions, a shut off valve when closed with the hand wheel and when opened they only allow flow in one direction only. So they are a shutoff valve and check valve combination.
a check valve only allows flow in one direction and cannot serve as a shut off valve.
In addition a non return valve usually take a bit more pressure to open than a check valve
