Highly recommend hiking it, but check with rangers to be sure what you are getting into.

Saw a lot of idiots thinking they were going to hike down to the river with a 16oz bottle of water and return the same day.

I drank that much from the parking lot to the building! Living at sea level doesn't prepare you for 8500'

Well it's the lack of humidity, the height will get you too.

We were told to drink as much water as possible and that if we hadn't urinated within a few hours to get concerned and chug until we did, ensuring we were hydrated.

We started out at @5am going down, we had several soda bottles of water, from the south rim to Indian Springs took us to about 11:30, we had lunch and started back up, up will take you longer, @1:30 I realized I hadn't urinated all day and started chugging, took til 3, got to the top @ 6pm and three college girls with one 16oz bottle said " how far is it to the bottom? he he"

I said "you're not going to the bottom"

    "we're not"

"not unless you want to end up in a stretcher in a helicopter and on the Wall of Shame"

They try real hard to save idiots from themselves, they had this wall of shame, a huge sign at the top with a warning that if you don't research or ask and go down and it gets dark you are staying overnight, we are not coming to get you, when we do the next day it will be by helicopter and your stupid story and your picture goes on The Wall of Shame.

We hiked down to the Phantom Ranch this March, what a wonderful park! Snow at the top, jumped in the river at the bottom.

Read the book The Emerald Mile before we went in, written by a river guide, great stories.

Seems they struggle with the old water line that runs from near the north rim to the buildings at the south rim. Must be some mighty pressures at the very bottom!

I got a contact name to get a tour of the mechanicals on my next trip. Same radiators in the buildings at South Rim.

I didn't realize I had so many fellow adventurers here! I'm currently hiking and 4-wheeling the San Juan mountains in the Ouray area. Spectacular scenery!! Canyons Lands is next after I leave here.

I miss the mountains. Consider the notch and slot canyons in southern Utah, mostly in the shade a great summer hike.

    Some good hikes posted here.

Wish I'd have known you were coming to my State Harv. Could have shown you some awesome stuff. hope you enjoyed your stay. I have a Arctic Cat HD I use to get around my mountain neighborhood. VERY useful "tool"... Dan H. and Dennis Bellanti have had the joy of allowing me to scare the heck out of them. Going down hill is much scarier than going up, for sure.

It's not so much a case of "You got what you paid for", as it is a matter of "You DIDN'T get what you DIDN'T pay for, and you're NOT going to get what you thought you were in the way of comfort". Borrowed from Heatboy.

  • If you get to Moab, check out the Portal Trail; just don't get too close to the edge otherwise you'll be swimming in the Colorado River.

I'm not afraid of falling but I sure the hell am afraid of landing. No way I'd get anywhere close to that edge

    Mark,
I thought about giving you a ring, but this trip me and my brother took my 3 heathen nephews out. They're keeping us busy to say the least. I'll be back out though. This was my second time and I will admit I've grown quite fond of the CO rockies.

    Alan,
I just left Moab. I didn't know about that trail, unfortunately. We spent our time hiking the needles, Island in the Sky, and Arches National Monument, in 100+ degree weather. That was an experience! Needles, canyonlands, is like a fantasy world. I've never seen anything quite like it.

    Hotrod,
I'll do those hikes sooner or later. Looks interesting.
