I opened up my mechanical room earlier this evening and noticed a coating of soot on the front of the outer panel of the unit. I lifted out the cover and there is a significant coating of soot on everything visible inside. It has been a few weeks since we have used the heating system and had not noticed any problem. I have shut off the gas supply and turned off the gas control valve. What should I do next? Since this unit is probably 40 years old, should I replace the unit since it has to be grossly inefficient?

Not necessarily. It could be that the gas valve regulator has failed and is allowing too much gas to get to the burners, which would cause poor combustion and sooting. Have it checked out, then decide which way to go.All Steamed Up, Inc.
