Pipe Banging immediately after shut down

We have a Bryant boiler from the 1980s and a one pipe steam system. The system has always been pretty quiet. However, the past few days it has developed banging in the pipes, but right after the system shuts down. As soon as you hear the thermostat kick off, it sounds like someone takes a hammer and bangs on the pipes for about 10 seconds. I thought pipe banging was a problem that occurred while the system was running. Any ideas? Thanks.
