Out of nowhere, many of my steam radiators are banging loudly when the heat is on. I've owned the home for 5 years, and we get some of that in our kitchen, but yesterday nearly all rooms do it. What could have happened so suddenly? It's not THAT cold outside...

Has anything changed since yesterday? Are the radiators pitched in the right direction? Is this a one pipe or two pipe system? If two pipe is there a trap that may have failed? Are there any kids that may have been swinging on the ,mains in the basement or a hanger that may have pulled loose somewhere along the mains allowing the main to drop in the wrong direction?0

It may be time to check the pigtail under the pressuretrol for blockage. This will allow the pressure to race up beyond the set limit, and do some loud things.--NBC0
