missing plastic ball in the Triangle Tube Condensate Drain Assembly

I found today that the plastic ball is missing in the Triangle Tube Prestige Solo 110 Condensate Drain Assembly. The boiler is working like this for 5 years.
The manual is pretty clear says not to install the assembly if the ball is missing.
What damage should I expect?

    I believe the ball is to keep exhaust from spilling out the trap in case it ever dries up. Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

    That is correct. It should be replaced immediately.
