No spud nuts on old radiators?

I picked up some nice old radiators out of an 1890s house to replace some leaking ones I had (EDR matched) but it not connected by a spud nut? Was this the way they used to set up these systems?
My question is I'm assuming I need to buy new valves and can't reuse the old ones(shame). Unless you'd think something like these would work a 1" Nut & Tailpiece like this http://www.supplyhouse.com/Matco-Norca-NT-100-1-Nut-Tailpiece

Those are right-and-left-hand-thread nipples. You caught the nipple into both the valve and the rad, and tightened it with a pipe wrench. That thread configuration made it possible to tighten both joints while turning in the same direction.

If you get Right and left hand threaded nipples, you can use those valves. As a matter of fact, if you can un-thread that nipple out of the valve, you may be able to reuse it as well.
