old boiler return trap

Would any one have any info on a Warren Webster 023 boiler return trap. We have one that is making a lot of clunking noise(sounds like metal on metal) we have it open right now but its doesn't appear to operate the way we expected. A cut away or something like that may help. Thanks. Jason
