split system residential compressor overheating

in A-C, Heat Pumps & Refrigeration
compressor runs for a while and after a couple hrs the compressor shuts down and fan continues to run (both compressor fan and air handling fan).



a compressor sensor turns it off and then after awhile it comes back on



cooling is mediocre (not robust); its a 20 yr old compressor



if freon level is low could this be causing a lubrication problem with compressor that causes it to overheat (no frost on return/supply lines by compressor)?

    Overheating

    Compressor overheating can be caused by a refrigerant undercharge. However, this overheating is not due to a lack of lubrication.



    These compressors rely on the cool suction gas to cool the motor windings. If there is an undercharge, the superheat will be high and the temperature of the returning suction gas will be much warmer than desired.

    its curious cause the return line to compressor is not especially warm
