HRV UNIT

I will be installing a Fantech FLEX 100H (HRV) Heat recovery ventilator. I've never installed a HRV , any kind. I have a few weeks to prepare and research they unit. I will have my top duct man with me, and I will handle all the electrical and start up. Im about to read the installation manual now. But I would like to hear in your own words, what is a HRV ? What does it do? How does it benefit the customer? Thanks Paul s

I use the Fantech

1504s a lot. I haven't had luck with ducting the fresh air to ducting in the supply...blow back into the hrv occurs. Instead, I tap it into the return at least 30" past the stale air intake back to the hrv. I use the dehum terminals to activate and use Honeywell Prestige stats to turn it on on a schedule based on the ASHRAE parameters loaded into the Prestige.

I would like to see better fan speed control. They can be a little noisy with hard ducting.

The simple explanation is that air passes over a hxer inside both incoming outside and exiting and the mix tempers the fresh air to building. You don't really want them on too much in humid times.

Anymore explanations please. Thanks Bob you explained it great, and the wiring. I just have to turn the air handler fan on with a set of dry contacts on the Hrv? And how importsnt is it to bslance the airflow betwen the 2 systems and can I use a dual port digital manometer to check the airflow via instalation manual. Thanks Paul S

Benefits

These units will provide fresh outside air to the occupants while transferring energy from previously conditioned air to the incoming . As newer stock gets tighter this is certainly needed . If you are connecting to a ducted system and not using this as a DOAS make sure to have the filters changed out regularly and a MERV filter above 11 is a good choice . DOAS is best (dedicated outdoor air system).

Check your climate zone also as HRVs after years of installation have been identified as less desirable than ERVs in I believe all but two climate zones in the lower 48 .
