Hot water boiler making growling noise.

I have a customer with a Repco hot water boiler.   The boiler heats the house but makes this growling noise.   I removed the draft hood and found the cast iron sections soot-ed over, ( never thought to see so much soot with a natural gas boiler).  I  removed the top jacket and burner assembly to clean the sections.  Vacuumed all the soot and reassembled everything.  I fired up the boiler and checked the draft and it was fine.    The burners are ribbon type and cleaned them before reinstalling.  The flame looks good.  The boiler still makes growling noises, albeit not as bad,  but what am I missing?

    Missing:

A combustion analyzer. What's the CO and why did it soot up? What did you do to stop the sooting?

The "growling" sounds like a form of back-firing. Never good but good for sooting. What's the gas pressure at the gas valve?
