Working on an old pre war steam system in Northern New Jersey. A steam main in the basement is rotted and needs replacing. It is 4 1/2" pipe. Never seen this size before. I am willing ti take a chance and downsize this section to 4" but can not find a 4 1/2" x 4" bushing. (I actually need 2) I've checked all my supply houses, industrial supply's, and the internet. No luck. I really don't want to repipe an entire building. Does anyone have any sources or suggestions? Thank you

A DIY 4 1/2 to 4 inch Pipe Adapter
Hi- I've worked with big pipe but have never run across a 4 1/2 inch pipe. The first thing that comes to mind is that 4 inch black pipe I believe is 4 1/2 inch in outside diameter. Possibly you could make you own fittings by slipping a piece of 4 inch pipe into the 4 1/2 pipe and welding them together. You would probably want to ream the uphill edge of the 4 inch pipe with a grinder to help smooth the transition flow.
Just a wild thought !

Pipe
Reducing the pipe size will create a place for the condensate to be trapped, and cause water hammer or sluggish wet-steam. I would highly advise against it.
As Rod said, make sure that it really is 4-1/2" and not just 4".0
