header connection questions

this is not a new issue to the board, the following header is clearly a problem because of the welded connections (swing valves would be better)



the question now is how best to connect to the upper header pipe. 



the upper header is coated with asbestos and best be left alone if possible.  the connecting piece leading up to this header is the area of concern.



can the asbestos coated pipe remain undisturbed in work to be done to assemble proper header connections to boiler?



the upper header is not directly above the lower header - is this a concern?

    You can wrap the asbestos in UL listed silver tape to avoid disturbing it while working on the piping.

    If this is  a cast iron sectional boiler the boiler will expand and contract differently than thae carbon steel piping in your header, causing press. on the sections, I would repipe it with swing joints and companion flanges  ASAP before the sections start to leak
