Siphon tube or not?

Is a siphon tube alias "pigtail" required for all (non-mercury) type steam operating and high limit pressure controls? OR is it only required for gages for protection of the instrument?

    "Pigtails"

    Hi- Some gauges have an internal siphon tube and therefore supposedly don't need a "pigtail" to protect them from steam. Like wise some controls don't need a "pigtail" either. However, it is good practice to use a "pigtail" as it protects the gauge/control from live steam.  Red brass pigtails are preferred as they are less likely to corrode internally and clog up. The configuration of the "pigtail" should allow water to drain away from the gauge/control it is protecting.
