best indirect heater for hard water?

We need to replace a weil mclain 40 gallon indirect water heater after 11 years due to what we suspect is a small hole. We have pretty hard water (148) and it was suggested to us to replace it with a amtrol indirect heater which has a polymer lined tank (special plastic, I guess) which is supposed to handle tough water conditions. The weil mclain had a stainless steel tank, which in understood should have lasted longer, but perhaps the hard water did it in. Someone else suggested a burnham indirect which has a hydrastone lining, which is also supposed to be good against corrosion. I am at a loss - does anyone know which type of tank might be best to protect against the effects of hard water?

    not the symptom. Is a water softener an option? It will reduce the build up, keep the heat transfer surfaces in better shape and provide benefits for your faucets, and soap usage.



    Lower operating temperatures will reduce the mineral that come out of solution, keep the tank at 140F for good performance and bacterial issues. Tanks set at 160F an higher tend to lime up much faster and stress the metals more.
