Seen this today. Look like like it was for storing ashes from the old solid fuel boiler.

Any thoughts.

is there a picture we missed?

ash removal from old coal boilers was certainly a chore, and in our case required a wheel barrow and a run at the plank on the basement steps by "mr. Allen".

we switched to gas in the early 50's.--nbc
