When the electricity goes out...

What can be done with a gas furnace /hot water heat in a power outage.

My circulator pump and the thermostat/aquastat/24 volt transformerruns off of 115 volts.. Is it possible to use a furnace in a blackout somehow. The reason I ask is that recently the electricity went off for several days and everyone in our neighborhood was freezing. The temps went below freezing but not long enough to burst pipes.. but if it had been a little worse, it would have.

What kind of gas/water heat can take this licking and keep on ticking?

Preferably using less current in emergencies.. Can any just run on gas, no 115v? Its not whole house confort I'm necessarily seeking, just protection from bone chilling cold and below freezing, pipe bursting temps.

I live in northern NJ. Not in the mountains, more like the foothills.. (its not as cold here as there)
