Firomatic Fusible Oil Valves

in Oil Heating
I am doing some research for a paper on oil heating. I live in Massachusetts where they use a thermal cut-off switch above the oil burner that will disconnect the power to the burner should the temperature reach 165 degrees. They also use an oil safety valve that stops the flow of oil should the same condition occur. I believe this is part of the Massachusetts code. Does anyone know if other states require the use of such devices?

    As steve stated.

    I am in Maine as well. I think you will find that most all states that burn fuel oil follow NFPA #31 very closely. With some even more stringent than the NFPA guidance.

    NFPA 31

    NFPA 31 requires thermally activated shutoff valves in 3 places:

    1 - at the tank

    2 - within 6" of the filter on the inlet side

    3 - within 12" of the inlet connection of the burner

    See the 2011 edition of NFPA 31 - 7.5.8 and 8.10.6.  Also, note that figures in 8.9.2 are not accurate and have been changed for the next edition.
