peerless boiler replacement

I'm running a old Peerless jot with Riello burner on my steam system which I keep clean and it runs nice.I'm concerned with it's age and I've been offered a used 4 year old Peerless wbv and was wondering if this would be a good replacement for steam or would it be better to go with the Peerless EC model.I guess what I'm asking is what is the big difference between the Peerless WBV and the EC for a steam system advantages disadvatages.Thank you for any input.

    Boiler needs to be sized

to your system. I often advise against used boilers. They sometimes do not like being moved and they lack all warranty. The cost of a new boiler is low compared to the installation expenses. And a used boiler costs more to install than a new boiler in my opinion due to the extra time setting up and removing plugs that should have been removed during the first installation.
Cost is what you spend , value is what you get.

    Careful consideration.

Back when i was working as an engineer we used to ballpark jobs by multiplying the price of parts by 3, that covered labor and overhead. That was in the power supply industry but it applies to a lot of instances where you wrap labor around goods that have to be assembled. I replaced my roof a few years back and that formula was pretty close to the mark.

Charlie is right about the dangers of installed a used boiler because the labor will far outstrip the boiler cost. If you do decide to go forward with this make sure the boiler sq ft of steam matches the sq ft of radiators connected to it.

A properly selected and installed boiler should last a long time and while the upfront cost is hard to swallow the cost per year is a lot better than you will get for your car or truck.

    My understanding is .......

the EC ( and the JOT ) were designed as steam boilers that can be used for hot water systems too .

The WBV was designed as a hot water boiler and can be ordered as a steam boiler .

The EC is a bigger , meatier boiler compared to the WBV . A better choice for steam , in my opinion . Although I don't have much experience with the WBV steam block , I love the hot water version  .........

Who's boiler is under the jackets?

these look like rebadged units by the looks of things.

Both boilers are made by Peerless

The 1st pic is the EC . 2nd is a WBV . Both have been around for decades . Most of the Peerless product line is made by them . Except for the Pinnacle ........

Curious , what other brand do these boilers look like to you Charlie ? The Utica Starfire has a similar shape to the WBV I always thought .

definitely Peerless. They have pretty much kept the design for decades.  Good ole American cast iron boilers

    Just getting jaded I guess

With Smith leaving Mass i figured the first on was one of theirs or they were using Peerless boilers. I think I have been watching too many conspiracy theory movies. Or I am used to the "new" three pass boilers being European boilers with American jackets.
