Open Heating Systems

In Ottawa the plumbing inspectors don't allow open heating systems. But in other jurisdictions it is allowed.

From what I can find out the gas code makes no mention of this either way. The code focuses on the gas end f things. The plumbing code mandates the use of certified materials only to be used in plumbing systems. But does not specifically state heating with domestic hot water is not allowed.

I understand the dangers of heating with open systems since I am a licensed plumber and a TSSA certified heating contractor. But without clear rules the uneducated HVAC contractor will install radiant heating with an open system.

Is he right? I would love the exact code sections the prove the answer to this one way or the other.

    Seems like a "grey area" up here,,,,

    No-one (up here) wants to address this issue.

    Personally, I always avoid open-systems, unless they opt for a HX I walk.



    Until a "handy-person" gets caught-up in court action(God forbid), it`ll go on.  :-0



    BTW- Even the decision to use a LWCO is treated the same!
