    insulation=water-hammer?

    are you talking about the main pipes  hammering?

    the water-hammer is caused no doubt by trapped condensate, picking up bubbles of steam; which then collapse with great force of sudden vacuum.

    check the pitch of your main pipes, to make sure they all drain without allowing water to collect in pools in low spots.

    check your pressure to make sure it has not suddenly become high because of a clogged pigtail.

    is your waterline steady and clean? do you have a copy of "the lost art of steam heating", available here in the shop? water-hammer causes are more thoroughly explained by dan than i can!--nbc

    I would say that insulation will help eliminate some water hammer in the mains, but it could make water hammer appear in any piping that isn't insulated, if you only insulated the main.
