Replacing an open expansion tank

in THE MAIN WALL
I have a gravity boiler with a rotted expansion tank up in the closet. Can I use a conventional closed tank or a diaphragm type tank? I can make a new open tank easily enough but would rather put something in that will "close" up the system.

    yes

    You should be able to replace this with a diaphram type tank as long as it is properly sized and located. hope this helps.

    Sizing is easy but where might the proper location be? Can I connect it at the old tank connection or more near the boiler? I assume I would need an auto air vent at some point also? Only spot at the boiler with out cutting and redoing allot of piping is at the bottom drain connection on one of the 2" return pipesThanks all that may have some input.

    Is this still a.....

    a gravity system.... ie. No circulator.? If so i do believe that anywhere would be ok. Now if there is a circ. it really should be on the suction side of the circulator.....preferably on the supply side of the boiler.
