This is the house where I designed and helped build a one-pipe steam system some ten years ago, which was featured in Plumbing & Mechanical magazine and is referenced in Dan's "Throw-Backs" article. It's owned by the daughter and son-in-law of my old boss. The well water apparently has a chloride problem, which killed the Columbia CSFH-3 boiler. The house sits down the hill from a main highway that gets a lot of salt in the winter.

The new MegaSteam
We converted the original 2-1/2" offset header to a drop header, but the rest of the piping was fine. We also re-used the Vaporstat and low-pressure gauge that we had added a couple years ago. The owner built a platform for the new unit so we didn't have to set it up on blocks. And it's quieter, too!

The house
is something like 150 years old. There is only a small partial basement with some classic stonework and not much headroom. But plenty of room for a boiler!Co-Founder, All Steamed Up, Inc.
