does anyone know when installing an asme certified water heater is required? we had a situation where a 65 gallon electric water heater failed and got a price from our local supplier and an asme certified tank was much more costly and had a longer lead time. i can find nothing in our local codes and up till know i did not know that there was anything but asme certified tanks.

3 things...
A vessel of over 119 gallons, OR an operating temperature over 180 degrees F, OR an input of over 199,999 btuH. If any ONE of those characteristics is exceeded, then the heater MUST be A.S.M.E.
