How come?

How come AC unit's with a TXV metering device do not have a reciever tank, but refrigeration systems using a TXV  require a reciever?

    Pumpdown

I believe it is because most refrigeration systems have a pump-down cycle at the end of a cooling call and ac systems generally do not. Need a place to store the refrigerant during pump-down...

    Reciever

What about all of those systems that are not on a pumpdown?

    Good Morning "T"

The receiver is nothing more than a storage tank for the refrigerant.  In refrig. applications where we are usually dealing with evaps of 35* and below, it is critical to have a solid feed of ref. to the txv to provide designed, uninterrupted flow to prevent freezing of the coil, due to flashing or lo charge where it can be critical such as thousands of dollars in food.  Note:  Some A/C units also have them.

In applications where for example 5 story building, Comp in basement, air handlers on 3rd. floor, condenser on roof.  A lot of pipping yes? (this is an actual job).  By having the receiver, (storage tank), we are assured of liquid being supplied the the TXV without question.  The receiver in in the basement right next to the compressor, ready to move the liquid upon comp.start.

And yes there are problems in this application such as dead heading the compressor which we are addressing.  New building for us.

    Peace

    Mike T.
