in THE MAIN WALL
originally built as a bungalow(about 1937),,,, then the upstairs was added in (about 1955-56),,, is this an example of "top story" balloon framing? The top story "studs"are toe-nailed to the double top 2X4 plate of the downstairs wall.Funny thing,, the downstairs walls are 24" centers,,,, the newer upstairs are 16" centers. Is that not like a "brick" on a house of cards?

    Ok but

    The 2x4 on 24oc has adequate bearing in just about all cases,the problem is that the 16 oc on top will subject the top plate to bending where the framing do not line up. Not a great idea but it seems to have been there a while. A structural inspection would give you the comfort or options you might need in this case.
