Hi there. I'll be taking advantage of the $1,500 tax credit by finally completing a whole-house window replacement. It's taken 5 years of DIY, btw. Is there a make/model of conventional natural gas fired 50 gallon HWH that is Energy Star compliant that anyone knows of? Mine existing HWH is about 15 years old...Thanks, Dave

M-4 series heaters do better than most. I haven't found any other tank-type heater in the Baltimore area with a better energy factor. The 50-gallon is model M-4-5036FBN.

If you have a steam or hot-water heating system, consider using an indirect tank that is heated by the boiler. These deliver more hot water and have better warranties and efficiency, though they do cost more to buy.

Also consider a good-sized filter on your incoming water service. This will help keep dirt from getting into the water heater's tank, where it will reduce efficiency and, if you have the usual direct-fired heater, shorten its life.
