have a competent heat tech or company do an evaluation of your ductwork. If it is large enough to handle the A/C, consider going hydro-air. You can remove the furnace, install a fan coil unit with both heating and cooling coils, and install a condensing gas or high efficiency oil boiler to provide the BTU.....another question to ask yourself: just how often will I need to use the A/D. Maybe just running the fan will keep air moving in the house on those few days you really need to cool things down.

    Hi, guys,
    I just bought a place with oil heating and I want to upgrade or add cooling. I suspect this questions is asked over and over but I did a search without results. I hope my question doesn't bother you.
    Facts:
    Location: Montreal, QC (cold winters and humid summers, reaching 86F 12 days on average)
    Ducts and furnace in place.
    Oil tank to be replaced
    Oil heated water tank
    Previous owner used window' A/C units
    I was thinking in adding a heat pump but a contractor told me to use central A/C, and replace the oil heating for electricity (including water tank).
    I know it goes to energy vs. oil prices... And equipment prices, but, in your educated opinion, what would be the way to go? Thanks

    here is what I would do

    I would install a DAIKIN system
    forget paying for oil. no need for back up electric heat
    inverter compressor and electronic expainsion valve and they run at a minimum 15 seer but more like 20+ most of the time.
