A '20's balloon frame house has a radically different infiltration rate than a 1990 colonial.
Do the heat loss calculation.

heat loss
How do I perform a heat loss test. How do I figure out the amount of btus I will need?0 -
google for
slantfin heatloss explorer 20 -
20 btus sq/foot is a good place to start
for cooling sq/ft x 15 divided by 12,000 nice rules of thumbs, you will be close every time!0 -
No Way is right....
Example: My own home, 1906 2800 sq ft two story, 700 sq ft of windows, Northern Illinois:
Heating (based on ASHRAE)
As built, about 40 btu/sq ft, Upgraded about 15 btu/sq ft.
Cooling (based on ASHRAE)
Upgraded, 10 btu/sq ft, actual, 7 btu/sq ft
With "Rules of Thumb", you might as well cut your thumb off. At least use some sort of abbreviated heating calculation such as that published by Weil Mclain, or a more detailed method based on ASHRAE such as Slant Fin's.
