Tim, when you replace those, get in touch with Gerry so he can lab-test those things. It would be interesting to see what level of throughput they have.....

Here is a catalog page
from fulton sylphons 1922 catalog..if its the same #510 its an air vent (steam trap)..depending on your pipe size i'd replace it with a radiator trap that vents very fast..like a Monash #38 for 1/2'' or a monash #48 for 3/4''..

That unit
didn't connect to a dry return- the outlet was open. Notice in the catalog they say it does not close against water. That would not be a concern if the unit discharged to a dry return.
Any of the larger main vents should work in this situation- Hoffman #75, Gorton #1 or, for the really big jobs, Gorton #2.

not sure i'm following you Frank,
a cross over trap doesn't close against water either but connects to a dry return..for that matter most radiator traps don't close against water but connect to the dry return..thats kind of the application i'm imagining in my knoggin right now..it would help if he posted a picture or gave a better description of how its employed..we may be thinking of two different applications.

oh i think i got your jist now..
its not connected to anything on its outlet..is that what you mean't? yup,yup, like you say, any good air vent would then work..still would be nice to see a picture..i haven't run across that unit in real life..
