    Valve packing, one pipe steam

We have hundreds of one pipe steam radiator valves in service, and one vexing problem is the frequent loosening of packing nuts and the attendant water damage. What is the best packing to use, quantity, installation technique, etc? There is no mention of this small thing in any of our reference books.

These valves are in apartments and are operated by the residents. One pipe means lots of action. No such problem in the two pipe systems.

I use the teflon packing thats about an 1/8 inch in diameter. I wrap it clockways until I have enough to fill the space under the packing nut, but without having to force the nut on. Works like a charm for me.

The angle valves on the floor shouldn't de fiddled with for controlling heat to the radiator. Thats what the air valve is for. How many apartments per boiler is there?
