thank you gentlemen. I'll try the teflon and dope, and also pay closer attention to the threads.

Drip, Drip
I'm an amateur, and pretty capable, but....
I'm having trouble with some of my pipe fittings leaking in my near boiler piping (hydronic system). All the pipe is black iron (steel) pipe, and the fittings are malleable. I used pipe dope, liberally applied. I put plenty of torque on these (perhaps too much?). I also pressurized the system right after I completed the piping - should I have waited?
Any helpful hints on how to prevent leaking in these threaded joints is welcome. Thanks in advance for your constructive advice. I don't want to have to take this apart more than one more time!

teflon and dope
works for me. 3 wraps...0 -
Agreed on the teflon and dope, make sure threads are good
a lot of the import pipe and fits these days are mediocre at best, make sure threads are clean on pipe and check fit of fit to pipe just to make sure. Good luck, Tim0 -
Bigger than 3/4 inch
I will dope, sparingly, the inside of the fitting. The pipe gets dope then three to four wraps depending on the tape.0 -
Thanks Mark - you put the dope on first
and then the tape....that is the opposite of what I would have thought. Seems like the dope would prevent the tape from 'sticking' making it harder to wrap...0 -
