some manufacturers ask for that..Dunkirk for one..the theroy is that there would be less chance of a rust hole at the waterline air line level by flooding the boiler completely..if your in an area with a long 'off' season it is worth it..in my local with around a four month off season, we don't generally do that but some guys do..it cannot hurt..but may or may not help..if its done there really should be an oxygen scavenger chemical in the water as the added water will of course bring in more oxygen.

Flooded Steam Boiler

I was reading some old maintenance logs at a building that we service. At one time, we were flooding the steamer in the summer months. Why would that have been done? Is that normal procedure for the off season?

could be

a leaking water feeder or valve..could be bad steam traps that held back water which finally/eventually came back to the boiler..could also be one pipe radiator inlet valves that were closed but had bad washers (this lets steam in but holds the condensate up from coming back. But it will eventually come back).

Let me rephrase what I had read in the old maintenance log. The Tech had noted that he had purposely flooded the boiler for the summer.
