Just kidding, most likely the conduction of ground core heat via the moisture content of the soil.

    Ground temp.23*F yet not frozen

    Just trying to understand how the trench I dug looking for my father in-laws frozen water line was 23*F wet and yet not frozen like the first 18" above it. The frozen ground was in the 22*F range.
