Lead castings on supply/return lines

he was trying to damp vibration of the line from something (the circ?). Odd.

    Lead casting on supply and return lines of boiler

    Has anyone see or heard of putting lead casting on the supply and return lines of a boiler? I bought this house a couple years, the previous owner was the old steam guru from the local hospital. I have since replaced this boiler but I've always wondered why he would have put these on. My best guess is to dampen pump vibration.

    My guess is that they are magnets which some use on water based systems for corrosion protection.

    They were definitely made of lead. I took them to the metal recycling yard myself. They paid me $0.07 per pound. I think there was about 70 pounds in all. Notice the u-bolt and metal bracket just above the casting.

    Precious lead scrap. Well, copper is, too, etc.

    Kirk, I hope they gave you $0.70/pound for scrap lead. I was glad, a few years ago, to find 400 pounds at $1/lb to melt down for a pivoting mast counterweight. Seems it is even costlier now.

    They called it “Dirty Lead” since it surrounded copper pipe. I was just happy to get it recycled and off my hands. I got a good amount for the copper though.
