you may want to consider a pressure test on the entire gas system to rule out leaks. Pin hole leaks can raise fuel consumption dramatically, not to mention be dangerous.

I have an american standard steam boiler with a honeywell vs820a1054 millivolt gas valve. could someone please advise on how best to set the pilot adjustment screw. The gas consumption has been very high without any other gas appliances on(even pilots). the last month alone was 18ccf of NG and my friends whole gas house bill was like 22ccf.0

            mark, the pilot
should envelope the upper 1/2 to 3/8 of the pilot generator. I would not suggest reducing it however unless it is causing the tip of the generator to glow "cherry red" it should be a dull red. The pilot generator on your system is what powers your system. If you reduce the flame you could end up with no heat when it gets cold. The pilot also tends to keep the boiler dry during the summer when dampness has a tendency to cause the boiler to condensate.
What other gas equipment do you have?0

simple test to check for gas leak
turn off all appliances at appliance gas valve and watch the half foot dial on the gas meter. A leak will show up pretty quickly. Also your gas co will usually come out and check for free0
