in THE MAIN WALL
A friend is buying one floor (er, condo) of a 2 family house. The basement has two of these. They look so...proud. The downstairs people are replacing theirs with a gas & FHW setup but I'm trying to convince my friend to stick with this one until it goes, which it doesn't *sound* like it wants to do anytime soon but what do I know.

Any ideas on the age & original fuel? Oh and if it looks like it's about to disintegrate, please tell me :-)

    Coal to oil conversion

    I think it's pretty, too, but it's a coal boiler converted to oil, so it's not very efficient. Probably last a good long time, IMO, but your friend is going to pay for a lot more oil than he probably wants to.

    Make a nice looking planter.

    Dates from the early '60s, late '50s maybe.

    I used to have one that dated from 1910, but they converted it the same way--by taking out the grates and the ash cleanout door and poking that exact same Beckett into a tin plate held into place with refractory cement.

    that looks like an old Red Square coal stoker steam boiler
    late 30's early forties converted to oil with a beckett burner.Probaly the second or third burner. Upgrading this
    unit will save your friend at least 40% or more.
